Valentines Day Flowers

Why Dried Flowers Make the Best Valentine’s Gift:

Valentine’s Day is usually associated with big red roses that are flown in from far, far away. Creating a very high carbon footprint. They’re beautiful, sure. But when you stop to smell the roses on Valentine's Day, do you ever wonder how that bouquet gets prepared? They’ve lost most of their scent traveling thousands of miles, they still smell decent. But then they fade, petals drop, and the moment passes. And you didn’t support anyone locally, only encouraged other countries to take extreme measures to grow and ship these flowers. Well over 80% of fresh cut flowers are from other countries.

Sure there’s the possibility of forcing flowers in a heated greenhouse, is it profitable? Not really, and I’m not saying I’ll never offer that. I love fresh flowers!! But on our farm, I’ve come to love Valentine’s Day for a different reason. It’s a quiet season. The fields are mostly resting. And the flowers I’m offering aren’t rushed or fragile — they’re meant to last.

That’s why I love dried flowers for Valentine’s Day. They last far beyond February 14! Which is why they’re often called everlasting flowers, a dried bouquet can last years, with no water and no maintenance. Long after the chocolates are gone and the cards are tucked away, those blooms are still sitting on a shelf or table. Maybe even a dried flower wreath hung up on the wall quietly reminding someone they were loved?!

There’s something special about a gift that doesn’t disappear after a few days. Every dried bouquet started several months ago, in a completely different season. Seeds were planted, flowers were harvested at just the right moment, carefully dried to preserve their color and shape. And finally, they were thoughtfully arranged!

Everlasting flowers carry a story of patience, waiting, and intention. In a season that often feels rushed and commercialized, they offer something calmer and more thoughtful.

So this Valentine’s Day, gift your loved one with something a little more meaningful (and local) and don’t forget ALL your loved ones, not just your significant other!

  • A friend who could use a little cheer

  • A child who loves having something special in their room

  • A mom, sister, or neighbor

  • A teacher or coworker

  • Or yourself (because that counts too).

This Valentine’s Day, I hope you choose something that lasts!!
