What is a “wildflower”?

Do you know how many requests I get for “wildflowers”? It’s unbelievable! And honestly I have no idea what people’s perceptions of wildflowers are because mine? Well it’s not what I grow 😆 I actually only pick 2 wildflowers on the farm and that’s Queen Anne’s Lace and Golden Rod.

Here’s a fun experiment to do with Queen Anne’s Lace: Pick some fresh and add food coloring to the water. The white tiny flower petals will soak up the color! My boys love doing that each year! Personal fav is blue!

To me wildflower is just that, it grows in the wild, without any help from me. All my flowers get very much cared for by me. So technically I really have no “wildflowers” that I sell.

I’ll admit that I do perceive the month of June as wildflower month. Not because of them being wild but that’s when perennials bloom and give that wild flower type style. It’s more of a pastel earthy color scheme. And that’s also typically when I start seeing queen annes lace bloom, all though it does stick around most of the summer.

My other wildflower I pick comes in late summer, golden rod or solidago. That yellow spiky flower that people always confuse with ragweed and allergies. No allergies on the golden rod! The golden rod before it blooms out too much is just stunning in a mix! Typically this time of year I think of the flowers as bright and bold. Two very different styles as my perceived thought of “wildflowers”.
